On the right track - the partnerships with MIT, CMU and UTA

INESC Porto is facing a new challenge - it has signed all three agreements with USA universities, promoted by the Portuguese Government to enhance the quality of scientific research:

• MIT - Massachussets Institute of Technology
• CMU - Carnegie Mellon University
• UTA - University of Texas at Austin

This means that PhD students coming to INESC Porto from all over the world now have a chance of enrolling in the joint scientific activities of the Portuguese institution with the American ones. This joint research projects will lead to the PhD thesis of the students, recognized as emerging from the consortia formed by the American and the Portuguese institutions involved.

In the case of CMU/INESC Porto, students may even be candidates to the joint dual degree programme, meaning that  if they are accepted by both universities they may follow their courses and submit their theses in Portugal and yet receive a double diploma, from the University of Porto and from Carnegie Mellon University. Of course, on a case by case analysis, they will also have the possibility of completing the degree in the US and get the same double diploma.

To achieve this, INESC Porto is cooperating with the University of Porto in guaranteeing a quality control system in agreement with its American partners, so that the courses followed and the theses submitted will have the same level of recognized quality as in the United States universities.
