New Rector of UP invests in Research and Internationalization
On July 3, José Marques dos Santos took office as the 17th Rector of the University of Porto, promising new challenges for the next five years. As a challenge to all the community, the new rector intends to see the majority of the Portuguese University in the ranking of the 100 best European universities.
It is a clear investment in the internationalization of the University of Porto (U.Porto) that involves a greater number of students who obtain their degrees in U.Porto as well as more international mobility of students, professors and researchers.
When the rector outlined the goals for the next five years, there was an emphasis on research given that he considers that to be the fundamental pillar on which the whole building of the University rests. He believes in the “promotion of the economic and social development, through the value of the discoveries, of the innovation and the cultural and artistic creations generated in the University itself”
INESC Porto is ready to accept this challenge. In fact, INESC Porto is already used to acting as an interface between the academic world and the entrepreneurial world according to criteria of innovation and internationalization.
José Marques dos Santos is a Professor of Electrical Engineering, he is 59 years old and he obtained his degree in Electrical Engineering in the University of Porto in 1971. In 1997, he concluded his PhD in the University of Manchester and when he returned to Porto he was the director of Faculty of Engineering for 11 years.
