The 14th Conference on Pattern Languages of Programs (PLoP) took place in Monticello, Illinois (USA) between 5 and 8 September.

This important event gathers a large community of software pattern researchers, specialists and enthusiasts.

The Conference Chair was Ademar Aguiar, researcher at the Information and Communication Systems Unit (USIC) and member of the Hillside Group. Also, there was a member of the Program Committee who co-wrote an article called "Patterns for Refactoring to Aspects: an incipient Pattern Language".

In 2008, Ademar Aguiar will be PLoP 2008 Program Chair. This event will take place on October 2008 in Nashville, Tennessee (USA), together with the 22th OOPSLA.

Software patterns document the best known solutions for recurrent problems in a given context (such as software architectures, software developing processes, project management and organization, among others).

Initially, patterns came up in Civil Architecture by Christopher Alexander's work. Because it was so useful, the software community started using it. Practically, it is the better way to solve certain problems because it documents experience, materializes good practices and enables its reuse. This is extremely positive because it improves manufacturing levels and software quality.
