The PROTET project – Promotion of Electronics and Telecommunications Technologies, submitted to the Ciência Viva programme by INESC Porto’s Communication Service, was approved and the activities launched.

The Ciência Viva Programme is a decade lasting successful initiative of the Portuguese Government to enhance in youngsters the interest for science and technology.

PROTET is the strengthening of a long lasting cooperation between INESC Porto and Escola Secundária Fontes Pereira de Melo (ESFPM). The objective of this project is to promote and publicize Electronics and Telecommunications Technologies through experimental work carried out by the students of that secondary school in INESC Porto and in the companies that use their technologies, as well as to extend it to the entire school and to all the schools in the northern region of Portugal.

The project intends to arouse interest in the Electronics and Telecommunication technologies in not only the students who will participate in the experience but also in many others who will attend the introduction sessions and will view the movie of the project in the project’s and the schools’ website; increase the number of students who choose engineering degrees; prepare students for the labour market, providing an early contact with the work environment in the companies in general and INESC Porto in particular, and permit the use of new technologies, in this case, the Internet in the advertisement of knowledge and professional experiences.

The project will be 18 months long and the first phase will occur from January through May 2007 and involves having ESFPM’s students in INESC Porto’s facilities, one afternoon per week, to watch and follow the carrying out of R&D projects in the areas of Mobile Communications, Electronics and Optical Fibers and Industrial Automation.

PROTET’s team involves Lúcia Sousa, José Carlos Sousa, António Carlos Sá, André Freitas, Rui Diogo, Fernando Guedes, Ireneu Dias, Orlando Frazão, Filipe Sousa and Ricardo Duarte, in a team coordinated by INESC Porto Media Communication specialist Sandra Pinto.
