New IEEE Fellow in INESC Porto
In the first semester of 2007, INESC Porto welcomes Mohamed El-Sharkawi, of the University of Washington, United States, as a researcher in the Power Systems Unit (USE).
El-Sharkawi is a IEEE Fellow, a pioneer in the application of neural networks and other techniques of computational intelligence in engineering problems, namely in power systems.
Among other initiatives, he was the founder of the Application of Neural Networks to Power Systems (ANNPS) conference and co-founder of International Conferences on Intelligent Systems Applications to Power (ISAP). He was one of the active members in the creation of IEEE Neural Network Society and is presently a member of the Administrative Committee of IEEE Neural Networks Council, representing the Power Engineering Society and Video Tutorial of IEEE Continuing Education Committee.
El-Sharkawi is the Director of CIALAB in the University of Washington (Computational Intelligence Applications Laboratory). Besides important scientific articles, he has published several books and didactic work.
We are proud that El-Sharkawi has chosen INESC Porto to work in his sabbatical period, because it means the quality of our work and effort developed are acknowledged but also because it shows how the statute and mechanisms of Associate Laboratory can guarantee high-level international cooperation.
