INESC Porto, as an associate of Ciência Viva – National Agency for the Scientific and Technological Culture, has recently joined the Residence Network Programme, coming up as one of the entities of hosting of artists.

The Residence Network Programme: Art/Science/Technology Experimentation, taking place since March 2007, is an initiative organized by Ciência Viva and Instituto das Artes (IA) and aims at the creation of a synergetic platform of work and research between artists and scientists.

The objective is to create a network of entities of artists hosting where they can carry out artistic projects of experimental nature in the areas of Architecture, Visual Arts, Dance, Design, Music, Theatre and multidisciplinar activities, using the means, tools, materials and processes which any scientific research laboratory owns.

In each hosting entity, the artist will be guided by a coordinator designated by the respective entity. Each residence lasts a maximum of six months and is funded by IA with 1000 euros/month.

This is a pioneer idea in Portugal; in Europe, there is only a similar initiative in Switzerland. According to news published by Diário de Notícias, this Programme is arousing the interest of centres and artists from Paris to New York for which IA admits the possibility of expanding it to foreign countries.
