USIC supports SIGEP

Imagem Principal Artigo

INESC Porto has recently established a Collaboration Protocol with the Civil Government of Porto. The protocol's aim is to support SIGEP (Integrated System for Emergency Management in Porto) and to incorporate new functionalities.

SIGEP offers georeferenced information to support emergency planning and management, such as studies about natural hazards, industrial and technological accidents or forest fires. At the same time, it offers the possibility of locating, researching resources and exchanging information.

SIGEP has more than 220 information levels which makes up to more than 90 Gigabytes of data. The system also has 20 district and municipal profile types. It is possible to access all this information through a simple browser, without plug-ins.

The system is used by every Civil Protection Agent in the district and any revelant information data to civil protection is supplied, not only by the several councils, but also by some companies.

This initiative was carried out and jointly developed by the Civil Government of Porto, by the Information and Communication Systems Unit (USIC) from INESC Porto and by the Department of Geography (Faculty of Letters from the University of Porto).

While INESC Porto developed the technological platform, the Department of Geography worked on the project's content.

USIC's technical team is coordinated by Mário Ricardo Henriques.
