Por Paul Brown*
Since I arrived in Porto at the end of June, the
adjustment has gone very well. I enjoy the work that I do in
INESC Porto and the people that I work with. I was
especially impressed in my first month here how helpful my
colleagues were in helping me get everything arranged that I
needed to do.
During July, when I had language classes all day most
days, I looked forward to the afternoons that I had free to
be able to come to INESC Porto and see people here. During
those first months, I didn’t have much to do outside of work;
mostly I passed the time in my apartment or walking around
the city and enjoying the nice weather.
As the months have gone by I have been happy to find that
things just keep getting better. I am getting more familiar
with my regular routine of work and have plenty to occupy my
free time.
Through the evangelical church that I go to, I have met a
family that has been for me like a second family. I eat with
them a couple of times per week, have gone on some trips
outside of Porto with them, see them at church, and in
general am very grateful to know them!
Maybe my biggest surprise has been how little of a
problem the Portuguese language has been. I have been
happily surprised to be able to attend the lectures in the
MS program given in Portuguese and understand most of what
is being presented. Claro, não consigo dizer tudo que quero
em Português, mas o facto que posso comunicar ainda no nível
que já atingi é, para mim, impressionante!
If anyone wants to know more, I’d be glad to answer any
questions about my experience here—or about anything else in
which you may have interest.
O CONSULTOR DO LEITOR COMENTA
Hi, Paul, fiquei muito feliz with your words!
És um exemplo para nós of how easy integration is when a
person faz um esforço sincero. Your words são muito
simpáticas and reveal o teu espírito pacífico, observador
and brave.
This makes me hope que não consideres a mistake a decisão
of coming to Portugal - and that you may fazer boa
propaganda of how nice it is viver aqui, para que other
students considerem essa possibility no futuro.
Obrigado for wanting to be part da nossa família…
