I was delighted to be asked to write something for our noble
Bulletin again, not just because of the fellow-feeling and
professionalism of the people that come to me but also
because of the relevance this bulletin has within our
Institution.
For a first thought, I would like to understand why most
collaborators feel embarrassed when asked to contribute to
this bulletin with an article. Is it really that hard to go
on this small stage that, because it’s virtual, doesn’t make
you blush or shiver?
The ideas and games are important and don’t take long to
be exposed...this one, for instance, has to be written
during my cigarette break. In short, I think we should all
make a small effort towards a collaboration, also showing
the rest of the “family” that lives in this building a
little more of what we are. After all, if we all enjoy
reading it, somebody has to write it, isn’t that so?
After this note (most likely to mean trouble to me), I
would like to refer to a real fact, something that has been
bothering me for a long time now.
Last November, I went to Amsterdam to present an article
in a conference together with my co-worker Ângelo Mendonça
and Professor Peças Lopes, and I definitely have to complain
about the template I was forced to use. It’s completely
inadequate to the needs of the demonstration, with gloomy
low visual impact colours. I clearly felt that my
presentation was not very appealing to the people sitting
there. So, I would like to take this chance to suggest a
change into something more attractive.
Finally, (this has been a long conversation and I have to
write a thesis!), I would also like to draw attention to the
problem of the limitation of space of our parking area. I
will even skip the part about the mud and the holes that
make it hard for cars and people to circulate. But what I
must mention is the fact that the number of cars is getting
bigger (the Faculty’s security company is not making it
easy) forcing us to park in totally deficient areas, with
grass, rocks and craters.
I hope 2006 is a prosperous year for all and may we
proceed in our crusade towards excellence, in this
environment of openness and well-being that characterizes us.
