INESC Porto partner in business ideas contest

INESC Porto is one of the partners in Alumn-I-dea Idea Contest – Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Internationalization, promoted by AlumniLEIC, in 2006. José Manuel Mendonça, president of INESC Porto, is an element of the jury that will be evaluating the ideas.

AlumniLEIC – the association of former students of Computer Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, is promoting this contest aiming to create 10 new technology based businesses which are innovative and with a high potential of internationalization. The idea is also to start a continuous process that generates new ideas and boosts the evolution of the entrepreneurial setting of the north through the strengthening of the relation with the University.

The favoured areas for this contest will be the Information and Communication Technologies, Health and Energy. However, ideas in other areas can be presented, as long as they have a technological basis.

The Contest is divided into three stages. The first one will consist of the collection of an idea, formatted in a page where the objective is to stimulate the appearing of many ideas, in a simple way. From this first stage, around fifty ideas will be selected and they will move on to the next stage.

The second stage will support the selected ideas in a proposal oriented towards a business plan. The second stage will require a team associated to each idea, made of a student, a teacher and someone who represents the entrepreneurial sector. The goal is to guarantee that this proposal has scientific validation as well as a practical application. The organization of the contest will ease the building of teams. The creation of this team will be a distinguishing factor of the idea.

Twenty ideas will be selected from the third stage which will be evaluated by a jury that will decide on the winning ideas. For the evaluation stage, the teams will be given ten minutes to expose their ideas before the jury. Ten of those will be selected.

The Contest is happening in March. The first stage will take around two months between March and April, the second stage will take place between June and July and the third one in September.

The ideas awarded will be granted 5000 euros and the possibility of incubation in an adequate place. The award will be offered directly by the sponsors and there will be a premium sponsor associated to the event.
