Researcher of UOSE frames successful application in ESA’s Zero Gravity Programme

Every year, ESA carries out a parabolic flight campaign for 120 students of the 17 state members to perform one of 30 experiments. Flights will be in an Airbus 300 especially equipped for this kind of flights and they will take place in the last week of August and in the first week of September.

The researcher of the Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE), Carla Rosa, as a teacher of the Physics Department, is the tenderer of a successful application to this year’s contest. Thus, four students guided by Carla Rosa will test the transitions of gas and liquid phases under zero gravity conditions.

Under these conditions, new and surprising effects arise. Their theoretical description is yet unknown.

...UOSE has new PhD

On the 17th of March, Master Paulo Jorge Brandão Moreira finished his PhD in Physics, with the presentation of his dissertation on “Integrated Optics in Hybrid Sol-Gel technology”

The jury was made of the Professors Manuel de Barros (President, FCUP), Rui Almeida (IST), José Manuel Almeida (UTAD), Olivier Soppera (Mulhouse, França), José Luís Santos (FCUP), António Pereira Leite (supervisor, FCUP) and Paulo Marques (co-supervisor, FCUP).

...and is present at the Physics’ Open Day

The Open Day at the Physics Department took place on the 2nd and 3rd of March. A total of 1261 students attended several demonstrations of the Department and of the research centres there.

UOSE offered a room where the visitors were able to watch and experiment several prototypes.
