As a partner of the Faculty of Engineering of the University
of Porto (FEUP), INESC Porto was an active part of the Open
Week. The objective was to get the young ones to become more
interested in engineering.
From 6th to 10th March, INESC Porto was visited by
students and teachers from: Escola Secundária (ES) António
Nobre, Colégio Teresiano, ES of Rio Tinto, ES of Maia, EB 23
Dr. José Lopes de Oliveira, ES Fontes Pereira de Melo, ES of
Cerco do Porto, ES Aurélia de Sousa, ES Augusto Gomes, ES
Gonçalves Zarco, EB23 Dr. Nuno Simões, ES Diogo de Macedo,
ES of Castelo da Maia, EB23 of Nogueira and ES of Vilela.
During the five days of the event, the visitors were
introduced to the institution and to the respective R&D
areas, by the director José Carlos Caldeira and by the
President of the Scientific Board Manuel Matos.
In the area of optoelectronics and electronic systems,
Ireneu Dias emphasised the implementation and testing of
electronic circuits, design of printed circuit assemblies
and the projects of programmable logic devices. There was
still a reference to field experiences in the area of
optical fiber sensors, in applications of civil and
environment engineering.
Cláudio Monteiro and Mauro Rosa presented the most recent
achievements in the area of power systems related with the
planning of renewable energies using Geographical
Information Systems highlighting innovative projects in
Portugal, in the area of the renewable energies and
electrical networks of the future.
Representing the area of telecommunications and
multimedia, Sílvio Macedo and Luís Gustavo Martins presented
multimedia tools, focusing on the annotation of video. Some
of the achievements in the area of automatic analysis of
audio signals, considering the management, research and
access to great collections or files of audio documents have
motivated the research and development of research based on
content.
Luis Carneiro, César Toscano and Luis Guardão presented
projects in the area of industrial management and
automatisation of internal logistics of industrial
companies. These projects were responsible for substantial
gains of productivity in companies of several industrial
sectors and they include the automatisation of movement and
temporary storage of the products in course of manufacture.
Finally, in the area of information and communication
systems, José Lino de Oliveira showed GIS applied to
autarchies. Using GIS technology integrated with technology
of debates forum, it was possible to create a bidirectional
system based on the interconnection of the two technologies
and to offer a new channel of communication on the Web
enriched with a geographical component, acting as a support
for themes of public debate placed in the autarchies. Some
of those themes are, for example, the discussion of
Municipal Master Plans and Territorial Planning Master
Plans.
