The Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit starts ProNIC project

The Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP) integrates a partnership led by the Institute of Construction (IC-FEUP) together with the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LNEC), hired by Direcção Geral dos Edifícios e Monumentos Nacionais - DGEMN (General Directorate for Buildings and National Monuments), last 14th of December 2005, to execute the project named ProNIC – Protocolo para a Normalização da Informação na Construção. (Protocol for the Notmalization of the Information in Construction).

This project follows the CIC-Net project http://www.cic-net.org, finished in 2001 in which the UESP and the IC participated, integrated in a partnership of 10 entities, which produced, among other results, a methodology and a tool for the management and mechanized generation of specifications sheets in the area of construction.

ProNIC will last two years and its main goals are the creation of a knowledge data base on the construction works that includes technical specifications, measurement rules, performance indicators, product cost cards and safety rules. A bank of reference models will also be built.

These contents will be developed and validated by a set of specialists and professionals of IC, LNEC and DGEMN, as well as other specialists with widely known experience. The staging for the content generation will be made according to the following stages:

In a first stage – conservation and rehabilitation of buildings; and on the second stage – general work of buildings and road infrastructures.

The other goal is the implementation of a set of computer applications that enable the management of the contents generated and the use of those by the several intervenients in the construction process.

INESC Porto’s team consists of Luis Gardão, Luis Carneiro and Luis Lima.
