The Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) has a
new PhD in the team since last December 20th. This was the
day Luís Gomes, a UOSE researcher, defended his thesis on
“Lasers and Optical Fiber Amplifiers” at the Department of
Physics in the Faculty of Sciences of the University of
Porto.
The jury – António Teixeira, from University of Aveiro,
João Sousa from Multiwave Photonics (discussers), Oleg
Okhotnikov, ORC/TUT – Tampere, Finland (co- adviser),
António Pereira Leite, Manuel de Barros and Paulo Marques,
from the Faculty of Sciences/INESC Porto approved the
thesis, which demonstrated the applicability of the
technology of SESAMs (*) to the mode locking of lasers in
Yb-doped fiber, in the region of 1 μm. The advantage of
these devices, when compared to other saturable absorbers,
is the possibility of defining its linear and non-linear
parameters in a wide range of values.
This work used, for the first time, GaInNas saturable
absorbers for that region of wavelength and applied a
Gires-Tournois interferometer to the compensation of the
disperson of a fiber laser.
The possibility of pulses wavelength tuning was also
shown, in a wavelength band comparable to the one of the
Ti-Sapphire traditional lasers.

with semicunductor saturable absorbers. They are devices
allowing laser mode-locking (short pulse generation). The
advantage of these devices, compared to other saturable
absorbers, has to do with the possibility of defining their
linear and non-linear parameters for a large range of
values.
