Collaborators approve BIP

The survey conducted in late 2005 by the Communication Service has revealed that the Bulletin of INESC Porto (BIP) is well accepted by most INESC Porto’s collaborators.

Most collaborators stated that BIP is a good means of information disclosure, only one collaborator claims that he is not familiar with it.

38 interviewees (60%) justified their answer, displaying their opinions:

It makes the information circulate in INESC Porto, especially news about the Units and scientific events.

14

It is accessible, reader-friendly, easy to look up, comprehensive, democratic, up to date, graphically attractive and funny.

9

It breaks the barriers between Units and it strengthens personal relationships.

4

It is a way of knowledge, a means of communication that enables people to know INESC Porto.

3

It is a means of internal and external information disclosure, since it is accessible via Internet.

3

Besides being good, it is the only one.

1

It generates a feeling of belonging.

1

It is not just information, it is a leisure space.

1

It is professional and regular, it has a balanced structure.

1

It is concise and nice.

In order to become a better information service, the interviewees think BIP could have more art and culture sections, information and articles of opinion. The commitment of 25% of the interviewees who offer suggestions to improve BIP is to be highlighted:

To allow the possibility of immediate response and automatic divulgation, as in Expresso and other newspapers’ website. Lucas Soares had already proposed this but it was never implemented because the Board is fearful of this cultural progress.

To have a section that is updated more frequently, like “latest news”, or to be complemented with e-mailing.

Section of literary and musical suggestions made by any collaborator (like Russian Roulette only more interesting). And Sudoku.

External guests and mini version in English.

Disclosure of more important events in the media.

I think it is very complete and well done. Maybe you could change the graphics a bit just to look different. Besides that, I believe it is very solid.

Keep the current size.

Future events with the participation of INESC Porto or that may concern the collaborators.

To allow readers to comment on the BIP contents.

Corporative information.

Detailed coverage of the events organized by the Units (conferences, symposiums, lectures, etc…)

Outside access. Personally, I would rather read it on weekends, at home.

Some news from the “outside world” that are relevant to the present and future of INESC Porto.

Easy access, attractive and functional graphics; mixture of information and leisure/humour.

More information on the projects of each Unit.

Regenerate the rubric “Have Your Say” that doesn’t work very well, for the content of some texts as well as for the comments of the reader’s adviser. Important: alter the questions of “Russian Roulette”.

The survey has also revealed that the most appreciated and read sections are: Highligth, News, “Biptoon”, “Free Nonsense” and “Have Your Say”. The least appreciated and read are “Carpe Diem”, “Editorial”, “Tribune” and “New Collaborators”.

28% of the interviewees submitted their opinion as to what distinguishes BIP from other internal publications:

The fact that it is in electronic format and that it stimulates the participation of all the members of this institution.

It’s not very self-centered and there aren’t many self-compliments either.

I only know a publication of FEUP. The difference is obviously in the size of the institutions, for which, in BIP we feel that the news concern us much more.

It has more sense of humour and the information is more diversified.

I don’t know many, but BIP must certainly be more impertinent than most of them.

It doesn’t have an English version.

The fact that we can only read it online.

Good balance between information, size and right periodicity.

The ones I know are published in paper and they’re a lot “darker”. They are “official organs” of the organizations/administrations.

It’s not boring and the texts have a lively tone, which is not very usual in internal publications.

To carry on with the regular publication with which it started.

The format, the formality, the “focus”.

Good organization of contents and nicer graphic design.

I don’t know many publications of this sort, however, I think BIP stands out due to the funny writing style in articles or chronicles such as “Free Nonsense” and Biptoon.

It’s less formal and it has an active participation from the internal public.

More centred in the people rather than in the institution.

It shows the information from several perspectives.

It focuses both the projects and the people behind them. It grants a global perspective to all the Units in the organization.

When questioned if BIP should become accessible to the exterior, 90% of the interviewees answered yes.

BIP’s team is happy with these results: it seems certain that the Bulletin fulfills its informative function, considering the most read and appreciated sections, and never neglecting the irreverence and humour that distinguish it from other publications.

Besides the important information function, it is important we concentrate on people. We will continue to do it and, for such, we request your opinion. If you have any requests or comments to the results presented here, please send an e-mail to: boletim-bip@inescporto.pt.
