On the 1st of February, a new project of the Optoelectronics
and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) with the European Space
Agency was started. The project is called ESA-ONE and it is
aimed at the development of high resolution micro-optical
filters for LIDAR applications.
The project is led by researcher Francisco Araújo and,
besides INESC Porto members, the team includes researchers
from the Department of Physics of the Faculty of Sciences of
the University of Porto, coordinated by António Pereira
Leite.
The filters will be used in the determination of the gas
concentration (specifically CO2) in the atmosphere from
satellites at an altitude of 400 km by detection of the
back-reflected radiation of laser pulses.
The measurement of this concentration along altitude
profiles is highly crucial for the greenhouse effect study
and the global warming.
