With a regular scientific activity reflected in publications
and research projects and internationally acknowledged, José
Fernando de Oliveira has been developing research and
development activities in cutting and bundling problems.
After the conclusion of the PhD theses of the INESC Porto
researchers Helena Correia (supervised by José Soeiro
Ferreira) and Ana Moura (supervised by José Fernando
Oliveira), our researcher highlights the recent conclusion
of two more PhD theses that present important contributions
in the area.
So, on the 5th of January, our co-worker António Miguel
Gomes defended his PhD thesis entitled “Heuristic approaches
to the Positioning of Irregular Shapes”
On that same day, Maria Eduarda Pinto Ferreira defended
her thesis – “Approaches Based on Graphs for Two-dimensional
Rectangular Cuts”, which was also advised by José Fernando
Oliveira even though she doesn’t work for us.
It should still be mentioned that José Fernando Oliveira
is presently the coordinator of the European group “ESICUP -
EURO Special Interest Group on Cutting and Packing” (http://www.apdio.pt/esicup).
This “working group” was founded in 1988 and gathers an
important set of researchers in this area.
The Third ESICUP Meeting 2006 (http://www.isep.ipp.pt/esicup-3rdMeeting/)
will be held in Porto from 16 to 18 March and INESC Porto
will participate in it with four lectures by collaborators
of this institution - Ana Maria Moreira Rodrigues, Ana
Moura, António Miguel Gomes, João Pedro Pedroso, José
Fernando Oliveira, José Soeiro Ferreira, Teresa Costa.
