Marta Barbas, with a degree in Economy and in charge of the
Management Control area of the Department of Information and
Logistics (DIL) presented her Masters thesis on the 1st of
February in the auditorium of the Faculty of Economy of the
University of Porto (FEP).
The dissertation, entitled “The Role of Management
Accounting in R&D Institutions”, intended to characterize
the Management Acccounting Systems of the R&D institutions
in Portugal and investigate if the use of the management
accounting allows those institutions to manage their
financing in a more effective way. .
The thesis was evaluated by a jury made of Samuel
Pereira, João Ribeiro and Aldónio Ferreira (adviser) and was
graded Excellent. The reactions to the presentation were
very positive. The work was considered to have fulfilled the
requirements to the attainment of the master’s degree and
enabled the achievement of some very interesting results on
the role of Management Accounting in the R&D institutions in
Portugal.
In May last year, Marta Barbas presented a poster with
some preliminary results, in the European Accounting
Association (EEA) congress in Gothenburg. This year, a
lecture with these results was accepted, to be presented in
one of the sessions of the 29th congress of EEA happening in
Dublin (22 and 24 of March). In the meanwhile, an article
that shall be submitted to a scientific magazine will be
prepared.
According to Marta Barbas, the thesis is an added value
for INESC Porto because it allowed the Institution to deepen
some issues related to the management of R&D Institutions in
a “more scientific” way, namely in the part that concerns
the financing management, its maximization and the
overheads.
Graça Barbosa, a member of DIL, believes the competencies
of the Department of Information and Logistics are enriched
and that it is a part of the fundamental answers of this
support unit. She goes on to say the success of work is a
reason to be proud.
